timeline of student work

Learning, growing, evolving, reviewing, and revising are all part of the design process. As a graphic design student, I was able to improve my workflow processes and uplevel my design skills while learning about the latest trends and best practices in the design industry.

  • In this course, we discussed industry standard tools (Adobe Creative Suite) and how to use each program to create effective design.

  • Beginning with creating from a design brief, this course focused on the building blocks of client work.

  • Breaking the design process down into steps is a process that is beneficial to both the designer and client. Understanding the customer was a key component in that process in this course.

  • Contracts, timelines and refining the skills of effective client communication all go together hand in hand with creating beautiful artifacts.

  • Learning more about the building blocks of a website through HTML and CSS is an essential tool for any designer. This class also focused on UX, UI and best practices for dynamic web design.

  • Learning how to manipulate type into art and to use typography to effectively tell a narrative is both fun and exciting. Type sets the tone for the feel and the way a design will be interpreted by the viewer.

  • My strength and favorite thing to design, printed publications. This course focused on layout for printed books, brochures and catalogs and worked primarily with InDesign.

  • Form meets function. Working with a brand from start to finish to not only design an effective brand presence that meets the clients needs but that also communicates brand values consistently and effectively to the target customer is another favorite of mine. Strategizing how to make the design functional and effective is what it’s all about.

  • Using visualizations to tell a data story helps to increase understanding on a given topic. Learning to correctly interpret and leverage data plays a vital role in being able to create effective designs.

  • Taking web design skills a few steps further as well as learning about CMS platforms, specifically WordPress, has helped to bring into focus another aspect of the design industry and the possibilities for future opportunities.
