first, we eat with our eyes

I like photographing food. With my recent classes in studio photogrpahy using lights, I have been able to capture more rich and interesting images.

The image of the noodles on the fork is taken using directional window light only. Angling the fork relative to camera position was essential so that the highlights and shadows didn’t get totally washed out. Adding a sprig of green to the top of the bite helped to bring color, interest and texture to the image. It also plays off of the olive colored background (which is actually a jacket).

The setup with the teapot and the hot apple cider was pretty fun. I didn’t know if it would work out when I was getting started. I used a strobe behind the scene with a curtain draped in front to mimic backlighting like a window. I then used a white reflector in front and a black fill card to the right to create dark and light rim lights around all of the glass objects. Getting the right amount of light to come through the apple cider was key to balancing color in the piece (rather than the juice just looking black).
