printed publication layout
Magazines and catalogs are my first love when it comes to graphic design. This project was a fun way to use those skills and learn new tricks for making layouts like these more readable. I chose an article about the now extinct Kaua'i 'ō'ō bird (an excerpt from The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green). I used colors from the illustration of the birds in the typography to tie the text and imagery together. I liked this illustration because it felt like an old Audubon publication. I used fonts that felt modern but also mixed serif and sans serif styles to create interest and make the article not feel too stark or cold. I used a fading gradient on the title name of the bird and a line from the article as a subtitle of sorts to let the reader know this article is about a bird going extinct.
